Pious thinkers

The signal was so faint
that only the most sensitive
radio-telescopes
could pick it up.

It consisted of a blip,
followed half a second later
by another blip
and half a second later
by another.

This was repeated one thousand times.

Then the pattern changed:
three separate blips
was followed by a two second pause.
This was repeated a thousand times.

Then a new pattern emerged:
three blips, pause, one blip, four blips, one blip, five blips …

Some scientists concluded
that the signal could only have been produced
by intelligence,
therefore it was sent by intelligent beings.

But a group that prided themselves
on their strict logic,
regarded that a s a circular argument.
