As my boss said, “We all get there”. To retirement age that is. So, where to next with the changes coming up?? Sitting at home is no option, unless I choose to do so. But that’s like pondering old age and the meaning of life. To quote my boss again: “The problem is not the problem, but your attitude to the problem.”

Yes, its a question of attitude this retirement business. I contend that musicians, artists and politicians (a lot of them anyway) live long lives because they remain creative, mentally active. A bit of good health helps also. Some will choose to continue to work, albeit in a sort of half day manner or I need some extra cash approach. But for me I’ve had enough of what I did for nearly four decades and I reckon the matter of money must be left to the experts (with trust) and fate. We cannot predict some event that will wipe the savings out and boot you onto the street. Its a matter of risk and I will embrace it with three hands if I had the extra one.

So retirement looms and I look forward to dodging those stressful parts of the daily workers – rush hour leave me alone!! I’m off to the beach or somewhere in my own time.

I still have a fairly long list of SA dorpies that I want to visit and hopefully these journeys will form the basis of a themed blog until can’t drive any more.

As a good friend of mine is wont to say – till next time, live carefully.

The New Pope

February 26, 2013 in Uncategorized

Soon the world will have new Pope. One of his first prayers should be not to deliver Humans from their sins, but from their stupidity.

My “Navigator” and I spent a few days last week up the West Coast near Lamberts Bay.

SA’s small towns are always fascinating and sometimes crumbling

I took this pic at Leipoldtville (named after Louis Leipoldt)….check your map.

Good morning.

Over the holiday period I heard this “joke” -

Man walks into a store and asks for the largest K***r pot they have.

Store assistant says ” Sir, we can’t use that word any more. We call them Cast Iron pots.”

“OK” says the man. “Give me your largest Cast Iron pot”

Store assistant says “Its heavy and you will need help to carry it”

“No problem” says the man. “I have two Cast Irons in the back of my bakkie who can carry it”

What this “joke” illustrates is that people (not necessarily we SA’s) will always find a way to convey our our prejuduces and dislikes even if it is supposedy politically correct or cloaked in pretty words. Human nature will never change.

My late Father was of the opinion that the world would only be a happy place when all its peoples were coffee coloured but even then, that would not help the thoughts that come from peoples minds and as long as we live in the world we do, self interest will remain at the expense of putting others down whether they are of all the same culture and colour or not (the recently deposed Arab leaders are perhaps an example).
