Ladies from across Umlazi gathered for a free domestic workers course at Hirsch’s Umlazi.
The course, presented by Mary Ann Vundla, is aimed at educating and empowering members of the surrounding community by teaching them the necessary skills for them to get employed in households and businesses. The course included the following topics: Use of appliances and cleaning materials, personal hygiene, setting a table and making a bed. The course incorporates theory and practical, and along with product sponsorship by Unilever, the maids will complete the four-week course and receive a certificate upon completion of the course. Standard bank also came onboard and offered to open each student a bank account for free, which will further aid in the students gaining employment. To complete the morning’s activities, the women participated in a short baking course, with the day ending with tea and cake.
